Sopranos – The Final Episode

ARDELL on 06 9, 2007

[photopress:132422__sopranos_l.jpg,full,alignright]I don’t know when we started having “Sopranos Night” at my house.  It just kind of happened with the crowd growing with each episode.  Family, Clients, Friends.  I was just thinking that we never included neighbors, same way you never see any of the neighbors hanging out at Tony’s house.

My sister dubbed tomorrow’s event “The Funeral”.  When I reminded her that it was also my Birthday Party, she just said, “Oh well, not my fault the Final Episode fell on your birthday weekend.”  Reminded me of something Janice might have said to Tony.

It’s a big Open House, and I hope to see some Rain City Guide folks among the crowd.  Hard to invite children to The Final Episode, unless you give them all blindfolds and earplugs and tell them it’s a game of pin the tail on the donkey.  Or a more appropriate game might be pin the nose on Christopher.  Pin the toupe on Sil.  Pin the white-winged hairdo on Paulie,  Pin the cigar on Tony.  Pin the strippers on a pole at the Bada Bing.  Pin the puss on Carmella. Pin the black rimmed glasses on Uncle Jun’s bald head.  Something tells me it will be more like Pin the rap on the NY Family by the time the night is over.  Most people with children will come between 7 and 9 and beat it before the second showing, or we’ll have to lock the kids all up in the bedroom, with a child appropriate video and one of my girls as babysitter.

So on Sunday, June 10th, from 5 p.m. to midnight or so, with 6-7 and 9-10 being The Viewing where we speak in only whispers, we’ll be dishing out the pasta.  All menu items coming straight from the Sopranos Cookbook, except I glanced at the recipes and said, “I don’t need no stinkin’ recipe”.

One of my daughters flew in from L.A. to join my other daughter who lives here, and we spent most of last night cooking eleven pounds of various pasta.  My third daughter couldn’t make it up with my grand daughter, so in true Italian Mom style, I’m smiling with a tear in my eye.  I’m in charge of the Pasta Fagioli (pronounced pasta fashool) which I made in a huge vat of a pot, with a wooden spoon that looks like a canoe paddle.  Beans and ditalini (dialeen).  I’m also in charge of the baked ziti, though no one’s to notice it’s really masticiolli, which seems to be Seattle’s ziti standy.  For good measure, and will be gone by Sunday, we added three extra pounds of pasta for the helpers to eat while preparing for the event with tri-color rotelle pasta salad and plain and spinach manicotti to tide us over until the festivities begin.

Anyone who has been to my house is automatically invited, by the way.  So if you are reading this and have ever crossed the threshold of my doorway, you’re automatically invited.  I don’t send invitations.  Mostly news just travels and it becomes a surprise party, because I really don’t know who or how many are coming.  My sister’s doing the baked chicken and sausage and peppers and spare ribs (the Italian kind cooked in pasta sauce, not the barbecue kind).  She’s also doing something with penne pasta and bringing a whole crew with her…mostly her clients.  Business and Family just go hand in hand for us, much like the Sopranos.  Hard to separate the two, as clients just become family.

So I’ll be sending a link to this post as the invitation to “The Funeral” or “The Birthday Bash”.  If you don’t get an email and just want to crash the party, please do.  We’ll have a couple of “friends” at the door doing the frisking of those we’ve never seen before.  If you bring a dish to add to the table, don’t be offended if the taster has to test it before the Family’s allowed to eat it :)   As usual…bring what you drink.  We’ve never had an event yet with not enough food.  For those who can’t make it, I’ll be toasting all present and all absent with a glass of chianti, when all’s said and done.

We all know we’ll be watching the Sopranos on DVD for years to come, so we’re not really saying goodbye.   We’re just waiting to see how the writers have decided to close the casket, and saying goodbye to “Sopranos Night at Ardell’s House”.

  1. How fun! I can RSVP as a maybe due to a very important homework assignment on Sea Turtles that my 10 year old is working on that’s not yet complete. I will hopefully be there with both daughters between 7 and 8.

When does the final season come out on DVD?

    #147211
  7. Gaviin,

I don’t think they announce that this early. We won’t know that until well after the season is over. I think they just released the season before this one not too long ago.

Thanks Ardell! I can’t wait to meet you & other RCG bloggers! It sounds like RCG has gatherings occasionally, so that’s really neat. I love social events! Thanks for being so welcoming. I’m hoping between school and work I’ll get to know people fast, too.

What happened or was it my cable that just went out?

I saw Meadow run into the restaurant and then the screen went black.
Not sure what happened. Perhaps it ended that way?

I wish it was just the cable going out. What a shoddy way to end it. Great, so now we can wait 3 years for the damn movie to come out. I’m cancelling HBO.

Disappointing, let down, 8 years invested for a tv stunt. Why bother to have Meadow go thru the parking fiasco, just to waste time? No ending. Dont care now if there is a movie, just like I didnt watch the last year of Deadwood since it was already clear there wasn’t going to be an ending there either. Not nice to make the viewers more mad at the company than the ending.

I’ve watched this series from the beginning. I guess I expected
the final episode to be as well written as all of the others.
It is as if the writers did not come back after lunch to finish
their day’s work…….. and what we saw was all they completed in the morning.

    It’s ok, I love the Sopranos…

no, no, no, don’t you see? they did what never happens, the bad guy and his hideous lifestlyle… everyone would sleep well at night if they knew it would all come to an end , but no one beats the mob do they? Aj feels better, Meadow has direction and love, Carmella is happy and looking at specs for a beach house… the bad guy wins..Tony Soprano got ” happily ever after”
    I think it was brilliant….

I’m with most everyone here,,, it sucked! I thought the cable went out on my t.v. until I read everyone else experienced the same horrible ending. That was the worst ending of any serious I have ever seen. They’ll be no good words from me about this crappy show ending,,, symbolism be damned!

The ending was a non ending. I wish the writers had put as much effort into the last episode as they did to the first. A hugh dissapointment. It sucked.

  30. I’m reserving comment until after the second showing starting in ten minutes. I will say I sang “Happy Birthday to ME!” when Phil got taken out. I said if they don’t take Phil out in the last episode, I’m going to be very disappointed. There were too many people here during the first showing for me to follow it.

    Be back after 10!

Seriously, we all thought the cable went out and rewound it, very unusual ending to an incredible saga, a bit disappointing.

I think that in an earlier episode Tony hinted when death comes, all will sudently go black..That’s what haeppned in the last scene of the final episode- all went black.

The shady character at the counter in the diner was either a thug with aimns to kill Tony & his family, or a Fed poised to bust him…

I think Tony, Carmella nd AJ were killed- only their daughter, who couldn’t park her car, probrolly survive, as she was late…

The implication was Tony was killed, and the blackness was the scene from his persepctive…
i too thought my cable box went out-Its a bit of a cheezy way to end the series, I was a bit let down…

  33. Yes, I also thought the satellite dish fell off. I panicked. I had a house FULL of people, and all I could think was OH NO!! What a time for my TV to go blank!!

I’m pretty much with Formatto. Such is the life. One day it ends. Maybe today…maybe not. Not just for Tony, but every one.

I think Cleaver will be released as a film and we won’t see Tony again until he comes back as old as Uncle Jun.

NOT ONLY WAS IT THE WORST FINALE EVER, IT WAS POSSIBLY THE WORST EPISODE OF ALL! WHAT WAS THE POINT OF SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON MEADOW TRYING TO PARK HER SMALL CAR? A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. WOULDN’T RECOMMEND THE SERIES TO ANYONE WHO NEVER SAW IT. SORRY I WASTED MY TIME.

  39. I appreciate the invitation to this event, but I have to admit, I have never even watched so much as 30 seconds of “The Sopranos,” so a party centered around the final episode wouldn’t really interest me much. From what I’ve read, it sounds like it was a creative ending that I probably would have quite enjoyed.

Maybe in 2010 we can have a “Lost” finale party.

    #147831
  40. I’ll have to start watching it now the, because I’ve never seen that one. The only thing I’m watching these days if West Wing on DVD.

Not to excited about the final ending, what they should have realized is that people have put years into following this series. There should have been closure, what happened there at the end. It was a very UN-creative ending to say the least. I would not watch it again, I own all the series, and I will not watch them again, just knowing that it all ends with a black screen and a girl who doesnt know how to park her car right.

(Oh ya btw, a mafia boss who is surrounded by murder, his friends dying, the police coming after him, goes out to a shit ass diner with his family alone, with none of his boyz around, I dont think so.)

    LOL

    #148634
  42. Have to agree on the diner. Should have been Vesuvio’s and Tony should have been acting like the hit put on him might not be over, and Phil might have had ONE friend gunning for him.

I think the whole parking the car scene was to give you the feeling that Meadow was going to walk in “late” to see her Dad with a bullet in his head. I think that was part of the suspense.

Do you remember if Tony was present when his Dad was whacked? Seems to me Tony and his Dad were eating dinner when someone came in and whacked him.
