House off I-5 and Ravenna

ARDELL on 06 11, 2007

[photopress:Ravenna.jpg, full, alignright]After passing this house a skazillion times, I finally got a photo whizzing by on I-5 just before getting off at Ravenna.

Anyone know the story behind this house and it’s highly visible artwork?

I don’t know what street it is on, I only see it from the Freeway.

I guess if it’s “decent” enough for every kid in Seattle to see it from the Freeway, it’s OK for a blog post.  And it’s not for sale, as far as I know, so I’m not advertising another broker’s listing :)

  2. I wonder if there’s a special room in this house.

    From wikipedia

Betty Page was born in Nashville, Tennessee… Page and her sister lived in an orphanage for a year. A strong student and debate team member at Hume-Fogg High School, she reportedly missed earning the title of school valedictorian and a scholarship to Vanderbilt University by a quarter of a grade point….Page graduated from high school, honored with a trust fund of $100, and enrolled at Peabody College with the intention of becoming a teacher. However, the next fall she began studying acting, hoping to become a movie star. At the same time, she began her first job, typing author Alfred Leland Crabb’s manuscripts. Page graduated from Peabody with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943.

Page… moved to New York City, where she intended to find work as an actress. In the meantime, she supported herself working as a secretary. While she appeared in some Off-Broadway plays in 1956, Page found her fame and success in glamour modeling; ….Her lack of inhibitions about nudity and her ability to express great joy in posing made her an instant hit….At the same time she posed for photographer Irving Klaw for mail-order photographs with a pin-up, bondage or sado-masochistic theme, making her the first famous bondage model.

  6. Rhonda,

Can you make a separate post of this so we can coordinate in case some of the others want to join us there? I already have too many articles in the last couple of days for our “Group Blog Sandwich” :)

Then we can work out a time and place to meet int he comments and highlight that it is this weekend, all at the same time.

    Thanks!

Just stumbled upon this blog while looking for images of our old neighborhood, ravenna. this house was featured in the news soon after the painting was done. i forget if it was on tv or in the p.i. or the times. but basically a couple lives there and the wife is a huge betty page fan, and i guess the husband is an artist (i don’t recall that he was professional, but he’s obviously pretty good), so he surpised his wife with this mural for her birthday. you can find the house pretty easily if you get off I-5 northbound at the 65th street exit (Ravenna). I think you just turn right and it’s like a block down.

  13. Narp,

Your rendition is correct from what I have read. I think it is in The Stranger link in comment #1. I especially wanted to post the photo just in case someone makes them paint over it some day. I enjoy seeing it as I drive by.
