The Summer Solstice Parade in Fremont
Rhonda Porter on 06 14, 2007
Ardell and I have been commenting on various RCG post about going to the Solstice Parade in Fremont. Well…the big weekend is here! Even though I’m a “native”, somehow I’ve managed to miss this legendary event. [photopress:poster_2007_large.jpg,full,alignright]
Not only does it mark the beginning of summer, which Seattle-ites long for, it is probably most known for the creativity and lack of clothing with the parade participants.
Kick off your summer celebration with the 19th annual Fremont Solstice Parade —unlocked, unchained, and unhinged! This year’s Parade begins at NW 36th & 3rd NW towards the Center of the Universe at 35th & Fremont, south on Fremont, headed east on 34th towards Gasworks Park. Picnic, Pageant, Live Music and more rule Gasworks until sundown.
Ardell and I invite you to join us at Gasworks Park this Saturday around 11:00 a.m. to watch the fun and festivities that benefit Solid Ground.

Hi Rhonda,
Although I’ve lived in Puget Sound for 10 years now, I’ve never been to this event either. If I get caught up on my “Honey-do list” this weekend; maybe I’ll stop by.
I hear there is quite a cross section of humanity at this event. Hmmm…I wonder…even though the event isn’t technically falling on the exact day of the solstice; do you think we may see some druids, fairys, pixies, leprechauns, elves, trolls, or maybe even a Celtic warlord to two setting up a scale model of Stonehenge properly oriented to catch the 1st rays of the morning sun?
Hi Rhonda,
I have been planning on going, I’ll meet up with you, Ardell and ? at Gas Works Park! And Joe, of course there will be a troll, The Troll is just a bit shy in his lair under the Aurora Bridge!
Things can get a little strange in “The Center of the Universe”!
Top O’ The Morn’ To You, Deborah, Lassy!!
So the Emerald City Troll lives under the Aurora Bridge, does he now? Sweet Mother Mary and Joseph, with recent crashing waves and driving winds so fierce, even St. Peter himself would seek the shore, I thought for sure he was causing mischief under the 520 Bridge. No matter, Love.
So the troll is a wee bit shy now is he? Be careful, lassy, he may be a wee bit shy now; but remember trolls aren’t known for their grand wisdom and intelligence. The sight of all humanity waving pretty banners, laughing, dancing and caring on…not to mention the smell of freshly cooked meat, may lure him out into the open. Although the sight of half of King County scrambling over the rusted pipes & boilers of Gas Works Park to avoid the troll may make good news at 11; your muggle friends, Rhonda, Ardell & the others, may need your protection, so be sure to pack your wand, Love…and don’t be drinkin’ too much o’ the Guinness…remember the trouble Ron, Hermione and Harry Potter had with the troll that got loose in Hogwarts…Oh, I shudder to think about it…do take care now won’t you?!! God’s speed to you, Love!
Slainte’!!
Oh Joe, you are funny!
I went and said “hi” to the Troll this afternoon (took a couple photos for some girls visiting the Troll – photos are more fun if both friends are in the same pix!) and he is still doing great, although he is still working on devouring that VW Bug!
I don’t need “no stinkin’” wand I used to fence…I’d be waving my foil (type of sword) around!
Thanks Beity…Joe Beity!
…And the Rest of the Day to You, Deborah, Lassy!!
So Lassy, you’re on speaking terms with this troll, then…and he’s feeling great, is he now? Oh Mother Mary intercede for us, you even got pictures o’ the creature, no less?!! My oh my, you are such a brave soul. Oh, but you have your foil, I see…hmmm…you could “foil” the troll’s efforts to scare or hurt your friends. Ha, ha, ha!!
Psst…now Deborah, darling, you really must be more careful with that VW-eating troll lurking about. If you won’t bring your wand, do at least bring your foil, won’t you Love? Your friends may need your skillful protection…especially after dark, the time trolls like best to prowl around. Wait…oh, that’s it…why didn’t I think of that before…bring your foil dressed as a pirate!! Why, with ostrich feather-plumed hat cocked over one ear, your eye patch, and foil at the ready you could be ever-vigilant for the troll, yet blend in perfectly with the natives. Oh wonderful [sigh]!!
Well, it’s settled then…that’s grand. Off you go..Ta, Ta!!
Mrs. Doubtfire
You paint a pretty picture Joe, did ja know I can complete the pirate picture with a real live Parrot on my shoulder? I have a Pink Parrot (no tall tales here!) who is sitting on my right shoulder as I write (have to leave my left hand free for my foil!) and she is very capable of watching my back with her formidable beak!
Hope your “honey do” list is done so you can come to the Parade, Beity…Joe Beity!

On Guard, Lassy!!
My oh my, that is amazing, Deborah, truly amazing. Honestly, Love with a real live dashing pink parrot to chat you up, and carry on your shoulder, you simply MUST dress as a pirate! Remember now lassy, for the well-dressed pirate it’s all about “accessories”…plenty o’ bling…bright red sash, gold jewelry, and of course, a flint-lock pistol tucked into your belt. But honestly, Love, you should really consider exchanging your foil for a cutlass…much the better for slashing the troll with, if necessary (psst…given the reputation trolls have, don’t expect this creature to play by the Queen’s Rules…they’re tricky buggers them trolls is). And for goodness sake, lay off the rum…do I have to say that again! Sweet Mary and Joseph, you must be ready at a moments notice to battle the troll.
Alas, Lassy, I may or may not see thee this weekend. Tis the art festival at Edmonds, I’m told, and I’ve got but a couple o’ me wee friends that want to make that merry trip to the northern hinterlands to partake of the festivities. If we should but pass as two ships in the night, you may seek me here thereafter.
Ta, Ta!!
Mrs. Doubtfire
Ardell, Gasworks Park is pretty big…any idea where we should meet there? I’m taking off to do some “wine making” somewhere in Tukwila (would sound better to me if it was in Woodinville!).
I’m planning to wear jeans and sneakers and my Keith Richards for President navy blue T shirt. Should I put a flower in my hair? Someone just brought me flowers for my birthday. I can pick out the big orange Zinnia
As to where…that’s why God made cell phones! Call me from the park and we’ll talk and wave until we hit the same spot.
What the heck are Joe and Deborah talking about up there. Did they start drinking already?
Rhonda, where’s the Friday rates?
Ardell, I think I’ll be in pig-tails at the very least! I have no idea what Joe and Deborah are up to… couldn’t even go there… it must be a separate conversation or world or ???
I’ll call you…if you don’t call me! Thank GOD for cell phones!
Guzman…I ran out of time today. I will post rates tomorrow (after the parade probably). 30 year fixed conforming was improved slightly this afternoon over what I posted at http://www.mortgageporter.com.
I’m so sorry I did not get current rates posted at RCG. I had someone contact me having horrible troubles from going through an internet lender who promises four lenders will call them…he went shopping for the lowest rate and was suppose to close on his home in Seattle yesterday…anyhow…any spare time I’ve had was consumed.
I’ll post rates for this weekend on Saturday.
I’m waiting for Joe to show up as Mrs. Doubtfire
That will be a vision…Joe could join the parade!
Looking forward to seeing ya’ guys at the parade. It does seem a tad bit chilly to be doing anything naked (including riding bikes)… where’s our sun?!
That was wacky, creative fun at the parade….Ardell, Kim and Rhonda, I’d say it was both an eyeful and entertaining for all! Good seeing you all.
I had a blast! Here are a few photos, and one of Deborah, Rhonda and I at Gas Works Park.
I was exhausted yesterday! After getting home it was all I could do to try helping a couple buyers with estimates. I think it was a combo of no lunch and my brain trying to figure out what I had just witnessed!
Ardell, after you left, Deborah and I were going to find the Art Cars…we got caught up watching the official parade (not the nude bikers)…and never made it to the car show. A nice gentleman below picked me out of the crowed…I think it was because of my piggy-tails!
Next year…when the Solstice Parade rolls around and someone asks us…Have you ever been to the Fremont Fair…we can just roll our eyes and say, “Oh yes, been there, done that!”
I’m trying to upload a couple photos to this comment…it’s not working! You can check out a few “decent” photos by clicking here.
I saw you doing my “post an a and then edit”
I resize the photos before uploading. Your file sizes are likely too large.
I just tried…it’s not working for me and I want to take off to buy some aphid killer. They are taking over the roses on my patio.
I’ve had less time to tend to my garden this year…because of blogging maybe?
I have to get over to my new listing in Phinney so I can get it ready to go into the MLS tonight. But if you email me the photos later, I’ll resize them and get them posted for you.
Thanks, Ardell! I send you the ones’s that I reduced…not sure if they need to be even smaller. It would be nice to have them on this post.
