How do you envision the Puget Sound region by 2040?
Reba Haas on 08 13, 2007
It’s expected that roughly 50,000 more people per year will migrate to this part of the country for a total of roughly 1.7 Million additional people by 2040 and approximately 1.2 Million additional jobs. These kinds of stats are what continues to drive the housing market in a positive direction for Seattle and surrounding areas. I say “positive” only from the standpoint of us not having a big crash in our local market in opposition to areas of the country that have fallen drastically due to job losses, over-building, investor hype, etc.
Comments on the plans are open till September 7th. If you’d rather get heard at a public forum instead of online you can also check out upcoming events in Bellevue and Tacoma.

Do you have a source for that estimate of 50,000 new folks a year? That seems awfully high to me.
King County only grew at roughly 10K/yr from 2000-2004 according to the chamber of commerce, and Seattle’s population is virtually the same as it was 50 years ago.
Seattle’s a beautiful city was some great employers, and the economy has been chugging along nicely of late. However that projection, given the cost of living and lack of an increase in high paying jobs, seems pretty far-fetched.
Very interesting Reba, at least the part I looked at; “Growth and Transportation Patterns and Presentation”, which is the portion of the report showing the projected the growth in the Puget Sound Areas of Snohomish, King and Pierce counties of the 1.7 million by 2040, or roughly 50,000 per year..
These are but some of the references you can turn to that will cite or provide these statistics.

oh, and I’m talking about the Puget Sound region, not just King County. Pierce and Snohomish are very much involved in this conversation particularly with respect to housing and transit.
Thanks, Reba.
Browsing quickly through the links, I don’t see any references to qualified demographers, but if you are talking about the area from Everett to Tacoma to Bermerton, I suppose 50K/yr isn’t outrageously high. Just somewhat high.
