Vive Tanta

Jillayne Schlicke on 12 1, 2008

A blogger larger than life has died after a two year battle with ovarian cancer. We will miss you, Tanta.

Tanta, who blogged at Calculated Risk, taught me quite a bit about the other side of mortgage lending; securitization, the secondary market, auditing, and mortgage humor.  I asked Tanta once if I could distribute something she wrote to my students.  She gave me carte blanche to distribute anything she had written, for educational purposes. Tanta was widely read and quoted by people such as Dr. Paul Krugman and the Federal Reserve. From CR:

Even researchers at the Federal Reserve referenced Tanta’s work: From Adam Ashcraft and Til Schuermann: Understanding the Securitization of Subprime Mortgage Credit, credit on page 13:

Several point raised in this section were first raised in a 20 February 2007 post on the blog http://calculatedrisk.blogspot.com/ entitled “Mortgage Servicing for Ubernerds.”

Tanta was also extremely funny. She introduced the Muddled Metaphor Index (MMI) and Excel Art featuring the Mortgage Pig, and she was the originator of a number of phrases in use today, like “We’re all subprime now!”:

Tanta’s Compleat Ubernerd blog posts live on, for those who dare to learn.

Calculated Risk is the very first stop I make everyday.

I enjoy Greg Swan’s writing, but Doris (Tanta) was in a league of her own.

  3. That is sad, Jillayne. Did Tanta ever reveal who she really was?

  4. Tanta had amazing insight and was a remarkable writer. She will be greatly missed. So sad for her family as she was taken at FAR too young an age.

  5. I wonder if she has any idea of how many lives she touched while on this earth?

  6. “I wonder if she has any idea of how many lives she touched while on this earth?”

I suspect not Rhonda. I don’t think most people realize how many they touch. Last I looked, there were close to 1,200 comments on the Calculated Risk post.

  8. I think this must make every woman reflect on how deadly ovarian cancer can be. There are literally very few early stage symptoms. I noticed that now the Wall St Journal has mentioned her passing and there was also something on NPR tonight.

  9. So sad. My mother and aunt died ovarian cancer. It’ very hard to detect until it’s to late. If you have a family member that has this make sure you are tested yearly for CA 125. Simple blood test. I do it yearly. I will pray for her family. God rest her soul…
